This San Diego unit has endured their pitfalls and paid their dues like many bands of their kind and through it all they somehow managed to release two full length efforts and their most recent offering, “Not For You” is a blender mixed amalgam of punk, hardcore and metal. This explosive and highly volatile record thrashes with contempt and inhibited rage through note after note of unbelievably course guitar riffing and ultra tribal, wall shaking drums. On occasion the songs break down into quiet moments of guitar plucking and slight electronica programming that usually, if not always, crashes into another sonic blast of forceful, energetic metal infused angst, assaulting every possible synapse of your brain. However intense the music is by itself, the dual vocal harassment of Dominic Moscatello and Brian Sheerin enhanced it further by providing a bevy of conflicting octaves; one being deep and gravelly and one hitting the higher notes. This contrasting vocal tactic allows for an interesting version of harmonizing that was both intriguing and exceptionally creative. Further emphasizing their interesting mixture of sounds are occasional moments of guitar interplay as they fed off each other before coming together in an atomic bomb of loud synchronization, bleeding with the potential for a death defying dance in a mosh pit. Style wise, the songs rarely stuck to a particular riff throughout an entire song, which allowed for plenty of diversity and acted as a provocation for the listener to replay the songs over again without getting bored. Interestingly enough, the song structures retained a sense of fluidity and melodic finesse albeit through severity. This band is no joke and they take their metal seriously and it is proven by whom they have played with in the past. That list includes some of the most incumbent bands like METALLICA, DEFTONES, SLAYER and SOULFLY. Songs like “Road Rage”, “Undone”, and “L.A. RIOT” define this band as one that doesn’t dally in weak songs or half-hearted attempts at cutthroat metal. Just for fun though, they did include their cover of “California Dreaming” at the end of the disc and believe it, you have never heard THE MAMAS and THE PAPPAS like this before. An astounding record to be sure and one that will no doubt be remembered when we look back at the year in metal for 2006.
